Process
How a project works, step by step
Five steps for every project, whatever it may be. Below, I’ll explain what happens at each step, what I’ll need from you and what you can expect.
At the moment, most people choose between a web agency, a design studio and a freelance developer. Here’s a third option. You can ask all your questions about the design, technical choices and the schedule to one and the same person, who will also write the code – from Groningen.
It is the scale that determines the pace, not the order. A website (from €4.500) and an app (from €12.000) go through the same five steps; only the number of hours spent on each part varies. With a website, the emphasis is on the design, the text, the images and the speed. With bespoke software, the focus is on the underlying aspects – such as who is authorised to view what – and how the system communicates with the systems you already use.
1
Introductory meeting, free of charge and with no obligation
30 minutes, over the phone or over a cup of coffee. You tell me what the problem is, I’ll ask a few questions, and I’ll give you my honest opinion on whether I’m the right person for the job – and who might be a better fit if I’m not. Bring a specification from the builder via this website (it’s free, you don’t need an account), or just come along without any paperwork.
You bring: the problem, any examples you like, a rough budget range.
You get: a clear idea of what's possible and what it roughly costs.
2
Quotation with a fixed scope and price
You’ll receive a written proposal setting out what I’ll be building, how much it will cost, how long it will take and what is explicitly not included. You approve a budget before any work begins.
You bring: feedback and a signature.
You get: a plan you can hold me to.
3
Design and construction, as the project progresses
I work in short cycles. In each cycle, you can view the actual progress via a private preview link. Minor adjustments are included, but for anything that increases the scope, you’ll need to pay first.
You bring: content (text, images) and timely feedback.
You get: a preview link that's always up to date.
4
Launch after testing
Before going live, I test the system on real devices, carry out speed and security checks, create backups and set up the analytics. I then launch it at a quiet time for your business, whilst I remain on standby. Friday afternoon has never been such a time.
You bring: the green light.
You get: a live product, and a walkthrough of how to use and update it.
5
After the launch: I’m not just going to disappear
After that, bug fixes and minor adjustments are free of charge for the period specified in your quotation. After that, you can choose between a support package or full handover, including documentation.
You bring: nothing.
You get: a product that keeps working, and someone who answers the phone.
The short version
I set the price before I even write the first line of code. After that, you can view the work via a preview link whenever you like, rather than having to wait for a big reveal at the end.
Ultimately, everything will be in your name: the code, documentation, hosting, domain, analytics and the design files. You can continue working with me, with an agency or with your own team. None of this depends on whether I stay or not.
Send us a brief description of the problem you’d like us to solve, and we’ll get back to you with an overview of the scope, costs and turnaround time. This also applies in cases where the honest answer is that you shouldn’t build it at all.
